"Using a radical, endlessly surprising narrative structure and a distinctive stylistic approach, Greek filmmakers Christos Passalis and Syllas Tzoumerkas tell of how the once-thriving Sephardic Jewish community in their native city of Thessaloniki was gradually decimated over the course of the violent 20th century. It’s a properly disjointed and unsettled tale, zigzagging across time, and taking place on parallel contemporary and historical tracks, tracing moments of anti-Semitic persecution, the Nazi occupation of Greece, and lingering postwar trauma. Originating as an installation project, The City and the City is a film of devastating emotional clarity and relentless force."

Patriarchy, Matriarchy, #ΜeΤoo, 50/50, Cancel Culture, and Greek Cinema. A five-day tribute program presented on the Onassis Stegi Upper Stage sparks debate on how an entire era was captured on film.

How did Greek Cinema capture times past – and are they really past? How did it foretell a time of change – and are things really changing? How have Greek filmmakers negotiated the concepts and terms that are precipitating dynamic change in the public sphere, and redefining long-entrenched attitudes?

An explosive film tribute at Onassis Stegi, featuring amazing and rare titles from the rich heritage of Greek cinema on both 35mm and dcp screenings. Films that enter into discourse with gender issues, and capture instances of a violence that has been condemned and brought firmly out of the shadows by the #MeToo movement; films that encounter various forms of Patriarchy, but also Matriarchy; films that are strange and painful, fierce and, in some cases, deliriously funny; films that not only enquire into Cancel Culture, but also shed light on the 50/50 gender parity pledge. These screenings connect what once was with what now is, sparking discussion about vital and pressing issues of our times.

*** My personal favourites, the unacknowledged masterpiece AMOK (1963) by Dinos Dimopoulos on Friday at 20.00, and THE BEEKEEPER (1986) by Theo Angelopoulos on Thursday at 18.30 (which I will be so happy to present both), THE SLOW BUSINESS OF GOING (2000) by Athina Rachel Tsangari on Wednesday at 21.00 and THE PRICE OF LOVE (1984) by Tonia Marketaki, on Saturday at 17.00 ***

...Simultaneously, at the screens of the Onassis Stegi foyer: shots, scenes, and fragments of contemporary Greek films (2008-2021) that mirror, supplement, are directly inspired from, or upend the films and themes of the tribute.

Really excited to be holding this workshop for the Artworks / SNF Artist Fellowship-awarded writers/directors and visual artists on “How to Develop a Film Collaborating With Actors” for the next 4 days!

The workshop will focus on creating a liberating, norm-defying, head-on and market-protected path for the filmmakers, screenwriters and artists, assisting them on developing and enriching their projects by direct in-site collaboration and exchange with actors, before exposing their projects publicly.

Imagination, freedom of spirit, tonal issues, boldness, character and all the blissful a-canonical tendencies that make cinema worth-it, will be exercised here.

Thanks to Art-Works, Marily Konstantopoulou and Dimitra Nikolou for the invitation to design and hold the workshop, to the great actors that will participate and act in this frame, and to the 20 filmmakers and artists ready to jump in!
